The Advantages of Choosing Seasonal Work

Recessions are bad news for any country, often leading to mass unemployment, food shortages, increased inflation and the widespread closure of businesses. Europe, over the last two years, is a fine example of the damaging effects that a recession can implement on a country's infrastructure. Even during times of prosperity there are still large amounts of people who struggle to find work. The most affected age group is people in their late teens and early twenties (18 to 25 year olds). Whether the country, or area, in question is European, a U.S State, a large city or small town, time and time again, it is this demographic of the population that struggle the most in finding long-term employment.

Students leaving university commonly find themselves perplexed by the lack of employment opportunities. After giving up several years of their lives to dedicated study, leaving with first class degrees, it can be difficult to understand why this age group is constantly being over looked in the job market.

If you are struggling to find work, and you fall into this age bracket, there are other ways to avoid long gaps of unemployment appearing on your CV.

Seasonal Work

Working abroad, or at home, as a seasonal worker is one of these solutions. A decision becoming more popular with graduates, as it also offers the opportunity to travel while earning in the process. Increasing numbers of people, mostly in the 18 to 25 age region are seeking these types of jobs. Businesses in the hospitality sector; bars, restaurants, hotels and hire companies rely on the influx of workers coming from outside the area, especially places like ski resorts and isolated communities where there is not enough local population to fill the positions needed to sustain businesses. In the coming years, with the effects of global warming on the rise, experts say ski resorts will have to exploit summer seasons to attract holidaymakers for other leisurely activities, such as mountain biking, music festivals, and hiking, says Iglu Ski. The possibilities of turning seasonal work into a career are plausible. If traveling every six months sounds appealing there are those who work a winter season, followed by a summer season, taking a few weeks off in between, using funds saved from the previous season. Closer to home, organizations and charity bodies, such as the National Trust in the UK, create hundreds of jobs each year. Ranging from full-time to seasonal, working indoors and outdoors, organizations like these can provide job opportunities that may not be available through job websites.

Another reason people choose seasonal work is the hours can be longer than the average working week, with more unsociable hours and shift patterns, allowing the chance to earn increased wages, and with resorts generally situated in remote regions there is less temptation to spend money, so on return people find they have managed to bankroll a healthy amount of money.

Job Agencies and Volunteer Work

Signing up with a job agency and becoming a temporary worker, or temp, is the best place to start on leaving education or losing a job. It can be a slow start, as work may be offered on a day-by-day basis to begin with, and the work can be dull, but if you show willing and hard work it will not take long until an agency offers work that can last up to a year, even longer in some cases, with the possibility of a full-time contract being offered eventually. These agencies are looking to see the levels of commitment that a temp is willing to bring to a job. If someone is ready to turn up to an assignment on time, work hard for the entire shift and generally integrate with other members of staff, then the likelihood is that when the role comes to an end, you will be top of the list for the next available position, which usually comes with a longer employment period and a greater chance of turning permanent.

Although unpaid, volunteer work will provide evidence to a prospective employer that you are motivated to work, as time has been sacrificed to help others, without financial interest as motivation. Additional opportunities can also arise while doing this sort of work, being involved with the community could open doors, as you come into contact with more people, some-of-whom, may be able to act as a reliable reference, or know of work going that is not advertised on the open market.
